How to use a fire extinguisher

Always read the instructions and become familiar with your fire extinguisher and its use and operation before a fire breaks out.

It is important to use a fire extinguisher rated for the type of fire you are extinguishing.

The acronym PASS will help you remember how to use a fire extinguisher.

Pull out the locking pin and hold the extinguisher with the spray nozzle pointing away from you.

Aim the spray nozzle low at the base of the fire.

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly to release the extinguishing agent.

Sweep from side-to-side. Start at a distance of six to eight (6-8) feet away and while keeping a safe distance carefully move forward saturating the fire.
